چکیده

We present in this paper our approach for modeling inter-topic preferences of Twitter users: for example, those who agree with the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) also agree with free trade. This kind of knowledge is useful not only for stance detection across multiple topics but also for various real-world applications including public opinion surveys, electoral predictions, electoral campaigns, and online debates. In order to extract users’ preferences on Twitter, we design linguistic patterns in which people agree and disagree about specific topics (e.g., “A is completely wrong”). By applying these linguistic patterns to a collection of tweets, we extract statements agreeing and disagreeing with various topics. Inspired by previous work on item recommendation, we formalize the task of modeling intertopic preferences as matrix factorization: representing users’ preferences as a usertopic matrix and mapping both users and topics onto a latent feature space that abstracts the preferences. Our experimental results demonstrate both that our proposed approach is useful in predicting missing preferences of users and that the latent vector representations of topics successfully encode inter-topic preferences.

Topic Analysis of Tweets on the European Refugee Crisis Using Non-negative Matrix Factorization

The ongoing European Refugee Crisis has been one of the most popular trending topics on Twitter in the past 8 months. This paper applies topic modeling on bulks of tweets to discover the hidden patterns within these social media discussions. In particular, we perform topic analysis through solving Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) as an Inexact Alternating Least Squares problem. We accele...

A social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences

With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...

Distributed LDA-based Topic Modeling and Topic Agglomeration in a Latent Space

We describe the methodology that we followed to automatically extract topics corresponding to known events provided by the SNOW 2014 challenge in the context of the SocialSensor project. A data crawling tool and selected filtering terms were provided to all the teams. The crawled data was to be divided in 96 (15-minute) timeslots spanning a 24 hour period and participants were asked to produce ...

Building Topic Models Based on Anchor Words

Suppose you were given a stack of documents, such as all of the articles published in a particular newspaper, and your goal was to make sense of this data, to determine topics that this data may be made up from. To frame this as an unsupervised learning problem, suppose the documents were written in a foreign language and came from a foreign planet. By understanding topics that these documents ...

Finding Hierarchy of Topics from Twitter Data

Topic modeling of text collections is rapidly gaining importance for a wide variety of applications including information retrieval and automatic multimedia indexing. Our motivation is to exploit a hierarchical topic selection via nonnegative matrix factorization to capture the nature content of text posted on Twitter. This paper explores the use of an effective framework to automatically disco...
